Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.

Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.

Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000).  Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

Whitehorse, Canada
The Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race is an annual race run between Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and Fairbanks, Alaska. News Star 2 travels along with the race route providing live coverage from the trail. This is challenging terrain where hills and buildings can get in the way of satellite shots.

Using News Star 2 as a production trailer, we've also covered the start of the Yukon Quest Live from Whitehorse. At below zero temperatures, we've made four cameras and audio work-though the announcers were shivering a bit.

The Yukon Sled Dog Race is 1000 miles and is considered by many to be the hardest in the world. For the past three years, we've followed the trail of the Yukon Quest (except through one small area where there are no roads) and produced daily updates for KTUU-TV (Anchorage, AK) and the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.)

The terrain and the distance make coverage challenging. We travel in areas where the satellite phones won't work.

Night and Day in Alaska
Alaska Sun DataProducers often wonder if they're going to have to deal with 24-hour darkness when coming to Alaska. The answer is-it depends on where and when you go.
