Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.
Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.
Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000). Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

Fishing
is big business and big fun in Alaska. Each summer our sister news
station produces fishing reports from around Alaska.
In 1999, we did a live fishing report from the 10 miles out into
Resurrection Bay to cover the Seward Silver Salmon Derby.
We loaded a mobile microwave unit onto a fishing boat and joined
the rest of the fishers while beaming back
