Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.

Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.

Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000).  Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

News Star 2 - Satellite Truck on the Prudhoe Bay Haul Road
In Fall of 1999, we took our first three day trip along the trans-Alaska pipeline ending at the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (the farthest north point you can drive in the United States).

Along the way, we did live shots and uplinks from the Arctic Circle, 100 miles north of the Brooks Range, and the shore of the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay.

The look angle is a bit shallow that far north (4 degrees above the horizon) but we successfully did live evening news updates, including a shot of our reporter and camera operator jumping into the Arctic Ocean on their final report!

For the 30th Anniversary of the building of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, we followed our news team for a week-long series. We began our coverage from Alaska's northern most coastlines where the oil is extracted from the earth and ended in Valdez. It is there that the crude oil is transferred onto double hulled tankers for distribution.

Night and Day in Alaska
Alaska Sun DataProducers often wonder if they're going to have to deal with 24-hour darkness when coming to Alaska. The answer is-it depends on where and when you go.
