Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.
Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.
Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000). Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

In July 2001, we took News
Star 2 to Kodiak Island to transmit the live launch of a
rocket from the Kodiak Rocket Launch Facility.
News Star 2 boarded the ferry in Homer and disembarked on Kodiak Island about three hours later. While the rocket launch was delayed by 9/11 and inclimate weather, the New Star crew enjoyed the challenge and adventure of the live broadcast when it did finally take flight
The Kodiak trip was an adventure because it was the first time we'd put News Star 2 on a ferry.
