One of the most recognizable symbols in Alaska, Denali National Park is visited by millions of tourists every summer, while most Alaskans miss the opportunity to see the mountain up close. In the summer of 1999, KTUU reporter Jason Moore became the first person to ever broadcast live from inside the park. For three days he drove up the park road with photographer Tom Cole, researching stories and beaming the reports back 230 miles to Anchorage.
Denali National Park is the most popular national park in Alaska. Mt. McKinley is the tallest peak in North America at 20,320 feet. Visitors from everywhere flock to this famous wilderness -- many of them tourists, some of them locals -- to see some of Alaska's most shockingly beautiful landscapes and abundant wildlife. On May 7th, 2004 we accomplished a first in Alaskan broadcasting with a live feed from Mt. McKinley base camp area. We flew our Norsat equipment and a news crew to the 7,000 foot level of the Kahiltna glacier in the morning and did several live feeds that evening and were back in Anchorage that night.
