Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.

Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.

Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000).  Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

In May 2002, Alaska Mobile Productions and News Star 2 went to Cordova, Alaska with the Prince William County Public Schools from Northern Virginia.

From the beaches outside of Cordova, we participated in an Electronic Field Trip about the shorebirds that migrate to Alaska from Mexico.

A three-way satellite link from Cordova, Mexico and Virginia was broadcast to a million school children who had been learning about shorebirds and tracking the progress of their migration over the past three months.

This was the second time we'd put the News Star 2 on the ferry system but this trip was slightly more challenging in that the height of the doorway matched the height of the sat truck. With contingency plans in place, we boarded the ferry and returned safely two days later.

Our crew supplemented the production crew from Prince William School District. We provided camera operators, grips, engineers and audio assistants.

Night and Day in Alaska
Alaska Sun DataProducers often wonder if they're going to have to deal with 24-hour darkness when coming to Alaska. The answer is-it depends on where and when you go.
